Community Garden – September 2009 Update

September 8th, 2009

Fall has fallen, for a time anyway, with this nice rain this weekend. There was 1.1” of rain at your farm, which has refreshed all the crops. On the other hand, it has made the ground quite wet, so we will not be able to get back to hoeing any weeds until late in the week. Right now you would just move them from one place to another and they would keep growing!

There is still plenty of food to eat. We are keeping the cooler stocked with lettuce, zucchini, cauliflower, etc. as well as all the items in the bins (cabbage, beets, onions, and red potatoes). Yes we have dug the first potatoes, with more later in the month. Slicing cucumbers are done, unless you want to glean the field, but there are still lemon cucumbers. Broccoli should be available a little more regularly now with some better plantings finally. The same with corn. Tomato production is increasing slowly. We will start picking winter squash soon, so look for that on your weekly visits.

BAGS: There are no bags left! They are only available when you bring all the extras you have collected at home. Some of you are using the reusable bags which is great, but many of you rely on the plastic bags. You have used up the inventory that was collected all winter, so if you need bags for your produce, bring them out. Thanks.

Hours: Many of you have your hours completed or are working regularly to finish them soon. Well done! Remember that your winter hours need to be worked during September and October because there is very little to do in the winter.

Some of you will be able to work the weekends in October for pumpkin sales, but for most of you your work will be weeding, which is mostly in September. We will send out a pumpkin sales schedule, to those that have said they could do that, near the end of this month, so that you can sign up for times to work.

This has been a good year so far. Thanks for your good work. Eat hearty!
